Southdown Estate
Owners
Andy and Elaine Sutherland

About the vineyard
Andy’s and Elaine’s Southdown Estate and Drapers Sauvignon Blanc vineyards occupy some 45ha of rolling clay country south of the Martinborough township. The location is significant in that the site is generally 1 to 2 degrees warmer than town vineyards and is relatively frost free, ensuring the Sutherlands a consistent and reliable source of grapes. Both vineyards are currently managed on a sustainable basis with the ultimate goal of organic and Bio-Grow certification. The first harvest in 2007 was blended in Ata Rangi and Matahiwi labels to favourable critical acclaim – fruit shows attractive tropical notes and clean minerality.

About the wines
Ata Rangi is an established Martinborough vineyard with an international reputation as a producer of fine Pinot Noir.
Matahiwi boasts an ultra-modern, high-tech winery in north Wairarapa and is winning fans with its elegant wines in the cool climate style that have an intensity of fruit, balanced flavours and excellent length.

Redbank Estate
Owners
Colin Caruthers and Deborah Coddington

About the vineyard
Redbank Estate covers 11.5ha on Te Muna Road, about seven kilometres out of Martinborough township. Te Muna is the Maori word for “secret or special place” and Redbank’s somewhat isolated setting is both distinctive and comfortable in its solitude. Colin Caruthers responded to the site’s unique character and bought the property in 1996, eventually establishing a home there with his wife, Deborah Coddington. The vines produce excellent fruit from the stony soils, which are predominantly planted with Pinot Noir but also some Pinot Gris, Syrah and Viognier. These grapes are made into Redbank Estate wines.

About the wines
Redbank Estate [couldn’t find a link] celebrated its first labelled vintage in 2003, and Colin and Deborah are justifiably proud of their flagship “James Pinot Noir.”

Hillview Estate
Owner
James Thyne

About the vineyard
Hillview Estate is a visually impressive vineyard with rows of Sauvignon Blanc vines marching back from the road frontage to elevated hill blocks. The 13.5ha vineyard on Pirinoa Road also includes a small block of Pinot Noir. Beyond the vines, an extensive native tree planting runs up the steep incline formerly used for sheep grazing, and the property also features a large irrigation dam frequented by coastal and swamp water birds. Owner and sole director James Thyne has had a lifelong interest in wine and finally realised his dream with the purchase of the Hillview block in 2006. Planting began in 2007, with the first harvest in 2010.
Hillview is beginning conversion to organic production, with certification due in 2013, and organic wine for sale in 2014.
